Manchester City are preparing for a potential shake-up in goal, with RMC Sport reporting that Gianluigi Donnarumma has emerged as their prime target should Ederson depart this summer.
The Brazilian, 31, has reportedly agreed personal terms with Galatasaray, according to Turkish outlet Fanatik, with a €3 million offer made to City. Ederson, signed in 2017 and under contract until 2026, was integral to the club’s treble-winning 2022-23 season but could now be set for a new challenge.
Since arriving from Benfica, Ederson has been a cornerstone in Pep Guardiola’s system. His composure under pressure and distribution have defined City’s modern dominance. However, the lure of a fresh adventure in Turkey may prove decisive.
Donnarumma, Euro 2021 winner and a Champions League hero for Paris Saint-Germain last season, is reportedly open to the move. PSG’s decision to bring in Lucas Chevalier has left the Italian sidelined, with his omission from Wednesday’s Super Cup final underlining his uncertain future.

RMC Sport claims City have already held talks with the 25-year-old’s representatives. “The agreement between Donnarumma and City will not pose a problem since the player is very interested in City,” the report states.
Guardiola’s admiration for Donnarumma is no secret. The Italian’s towering presence, agility and big-game pedigree could offer a seamless transition if Ederson departs. City’s hierarchy are ready to act, but only if their current No.1 leaves.

City fans are bound to be split on this one. Ederson has been more than just a goalkeeper, he has been a tactical weapon, starting attacks with his pinpoint passing. Losing him would mean losing part of City’s identity. That said, Donnarumma is no ordinary replacement. He is a player who has already conquered Europe with Italy and PSG, delivering under the most intense pressure.
Some will be excited at the prospect of adding a younger, taller, and arguably more commanding figure in goal. Others may be concerned about the Italian’s occasional errors and adjustment to Guardiola’s high-possession demands. His distribution is not as naturally crisp as Ederson’s, and in City’s system, that matters as much as shot-stopping.
The timing is also intriguing. City are in a mini-transition phase, with rivals strengthening aggressively. Any major change at the back carries risk, especially with Champions League ambitions always front and centre.
If Ederson does leave, City’s recruitment team must act decisively. Donnarumma’s interest in the move is clear, and his Champions League-winning experience could be invaluable. Still, the emotional farewell to Ederson would sting, and it would take more than a few clean sheets for fans to truly accept a new face between the sticks.
