Juventus fumbled both the first leg advantage and their aggregate lead on the night, crumbling in the Champions League play-off against PSV Eindhoven in extra time.

The Bianconeri won the first leg 2-1 with goals from Weston McKennie and Samuel Mbangula around the temporary Ivan Perisic equaliser. They were still missing Douglas Luiz, Pierre Kalulu, Arek Milik, Gleison Bremer and Juan Cabal, while PSV were without Malik Tillman and Ricardo Pepi, plus Guus Til and Rick Karsdorp only fit for the bench.

There was bad news early for Juve, because Renato Veiga limped off with a calf injury after just 11 minutes, replaced by Andrea Cambiaso and moving Lloyd Kelly to central defence.

Randal Kolo Muani nodded the Tim Weah cross over and Noa Lang had an effort charged down inside the area, but substitute Cambiaso’s scorcher stung the goalkeeper’s gloves on a Manuel Locatelli through ball.

Cambiaso showed remarkable calm to chest a Lang cross back to Michele Di Gregorio from point-blank range, while Kolo Muani did not make the most of a clumsy Flamingo scuffed clearance.

Kelly flung himself in the way of a Lang strike from the edge of the area, but PSV came out fighting after the restart with Perisic’s shot straight at Di Gregorio and Lang hitting the side-netting from a tricky angle.

Kolo Muani was denied by Benitez one-on-one from a McKennie assist, but it was PSV Eindhoven who took the lead on the night, levelling the tie on aggregate.

Noa Lang started the move down the left by shrugging off two defenders and picking a perfect slide-rule pass for Perisic, who took a touch to control and fired in on the half-volley with his second across Di Gregorio.

Lang was fired up and moments later curled just wide of the far post from the edge of the area, while Federico Gatti had to clear Luuk de Jong’s header almost off the line from a corner.

However, Juventus equalised in chaotic circumstances. A Teun Koopmeiners free kick was cleared to the edge of the D, where Timothy Weah smashed it in on the half-volley. The offside flag went up for Kelly’s position, but following a VAR On-Field Review, the referee ruled the defender was not interfering with play and the goal was allowed to stand.

It still wasn’t over, as De Jong got a long leg to the Perisic cross and managed to just bundle it into the path of Ismael Saibari to blast into the roof of the net from six yards for 3-3 on aggregate.

PSV had the momentum in the final stages, Til’s delicate flick setting up Saibari unable to finish from six yards and Tyrell Malacia’s cross only grazing the latter’s head.

Di Gregorio used his boot to parry the Lang solo run at the near post after squirming between defenders, but there was no separating the sides and it went to extra time.

PSV clearly had the momentum and turned the game around when a free kick found Johan Bakayoko to flash a ball across the six-yard box, Di Michele stuck out a boot to prevent the Federico Gatti own goal, but could do nothing on the Ryan Flamingo follow-up.

Niccolò Savona might’ve been offside when nodding the Samuel Mbangula cross at Benitez, but Dusan Vlahovic wasn’t when sliding onto another Mbangula cross to thump the upright from point-blank range.

Khephren Thuram dribbled through a crowd of players only to fire over the bar from a promising position, while Di Gregorio rushed off his line to deny Til one-on-one from the Saibari through ball.
