Villa welcome back a host of senior players for the crucial Champions League tie

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has confirmed Pau Torres is set for a return to action in the Champions League round of 16 first-leg clash against Club Brugge.

A broken metatarsal has kept Torres on the sidelines since December, causing the Spaniard to miss Villa’s last 14 games across all competitions.

However, the 28-year-old is in contention to make his comeback on Tuesday evening having been named in the squad that has travelled out to Belgium.

In further good news for Villa, Tyrone Mings is available for selection again after sitting out the FA Cup fifth round win over Cardiff City, Matty Cash is back after a two-game absence and Boubacar Kamara could start.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference, Emery said: “Coming back after injury – Pau Torres is in the squad, Tyrone Mings after he wasn’t on Friday, Matty Cash and Boubacar Kamara.

“He was on Friday, but on the bench, for tomorrow he could start playing minutes as well.”

Having said that, Villa will be without four senior players as they seek revenge on Club Brugge following the 1-0 loss when the two sides met in the revamped league phase of the Champions League earlier in the season.

January signings Andres Garcia are ineligible due to not being registered in the updated squad list whilst Amadou Onana and Ross Barkley are injured.

“Onana and Barkley are not available,” Emery added. “Andres Garcia and Donyell Malen because they are not on the list, Jamaldeen [Jimoh-Aloba] as well isn’t on the list.

“Other players are in the squad.

Emery can, however, call upon Marcus Rashford, Axel Disasi and three-time Champions League winner Marco Asensio as Villa look to secure a positive first-leg result at the Jan Breydel Stadium.
