Celtic’s Captain against Livingston, Liam Scales is leading by example

Okay, I’ll say it even if no one else will on social media, Liam Scales played well yet again in the 3-0 stroll over Livingston and looked very much the accomplished defender in the absence of Cameron Carter-Vickers…

CCV who was rested with the all important Champions League clash with Kairat looming, and with Callum McGregor on the bench, Liam was given the honour of captaining the side and also being the leader in the back four with two rookies at either side of him in Dane Murray and Hayato Inamura, who incidentally was very impressive.

Brendan seems to have a soft spot for his fellow Irishman, and he yet again showed that faith by not only selecting him to start, but handing him the captaincy as Callum McGregor was rested with Almaty in mind.

Liam picked up the mantle and put in a assured performance and not for the first time this season, and yes it was only Livingston who looked reluctant to attack, but it was still a fine composed display by not only Liam, but young Dane Murray also who looked just as assured and commanding throughout the ninety minutes.

Liam has had his fair share of critics, myself included, but it’s only fair that we highlight it when he does well, and he’s done just that in these last few fixtures. He’s certainly led by example and in doing so is slowly but surely winning over some of his critics and silencing the rest.

Criticism is sometimes valid, if unhelpful and there are always players who get it. It seems much worse in the social media era too. Whether it’s Liam Scales, or Arne Engels, or Adam Idah or Anthony Ralston or previously the likes of James Forrest or Greg Taylor there’s always someone subjected to this type of pile on – the ‘x, y or z is a truly awful footballer stuff,’ and it sticks with others then saying the same or of criticism. Sandman is excellent at regularly calling this out in his definite reviews on The Celtic Star, here’s Sandman’s season review from the last campaign.

Plenty of top Celtic players have had dips in form, or were struggling with fitness but played anyone. or were being played out of position. Big Idah is struggling at the moment, with the weight of the transfer fee and the support’s expectations turning to criticism.

Brendan looks like he’s taking him out the team to build up his confidence and hopefully we’ll see a better version of the striker who helped Celtic win the League and Scottish Cup the season before last and scored 20 goals last year, with what was it three at Champions League level? Not too bad a return to date when you link about it.

Congratulations to Liam Scales on getting the chance to wear the captain’s armband for Celtic.
