Despite taking the lead three times, SV Werder Bremen were left with just a point after a 3-3 draw against 1. FC Heidenheim. The visitors were able to score a late equaliser following a controversial free kick call. The mood after the match was tinged with frustration, as the Green-Whites sought to explain what had happened. WERDER.DE have summed up all the key quotes following the game.
Ole Werner, head coach: "We should have two points more. We managed to take the lead three times and didn't allow them too many chances. But, we were too careless at times with the chances we did give up. Their third goal is a frustrating one because it was actually a perfectly timed slide-tackle. Nevertheless, we can't allow ourselves to find ourselves in a situation like that – we have to take responsibility for the result."
Marco Grüll: "Of course we're happy about the goals. But, at the end of the day, what counts is that the team wins. Unfortunately, we didn't manage that tonight. It's extremely disappointing, especially when the free kick that led to their goal should never have been awarded. We can't change it, however, and we also shouldn't let our opponents mount a counter-attack like that."
Niklas Stark: "We should have defended better as a team, because conceding three times is far too much. Even though we're frustrated with the situation at the end of the game, we also have to take responsibility. We have to accept that we made far too many mistakes in our build-up play and that we were not good at defending counter-attacks. Those are the issues that we should be concerning ourselves with now."
Peter Niemeyer, director of professional football: "We were a little too careless and didn't defend well on their goals. I just rewatched the scene with the free kick, and I think that Jens clearly got to the ball. We could have played differently when in possession beforehand, but instead were caught on the break unnecessarily. Scoring three goals at home should be enough for a win, but that wasn't the case tonight. There are things that were good and others which we can improve on, and we will address those."
