Canada took on Group D underdogs Guadeloupe in round-two of Group D action at the 2023 Gold Cup. Here is what went down in Toronto.
Scorers: Cavallini 49′, Lina (OG) 70′ ; Ambrose 23′, Russell-Rowe (OG) 93′
A rotated, MLS-heavy Canada side suffered a shock draw to Gaudeloupe in round-two of Group D play.
The hosts were all over Guadeloupe in the early going, and perhaps should have found their opener just past the 10 minute mark, but Lucas Cavallini somehow sent his close-range effort wide of the post.
As Canada poured numbers forward, Guadeloupe remained threatening on the break to remind the home side that they had a role to play on the night.
The visitors turned the game its head before the half-hour mark, as Thierry Ambrose scored from close range to stun the home crowd.
Lucas Cavallini redeemed himself for his for his first half miss right after half-time however, getting on the end of a superb Junior Hoilett cross to tap home and level the score.
Canada completed the turnaround in the final 20 minutes thanks to a wacky Méddy Lina own-goal, reigniting the energy inside of BMO Field.
There was a sting in the tale however, as Jacen Russell-Rowe saw the ball bounce off his leg and into the back of the net to see Guadeloupe snatch a point at the death and shock the heavily favored Canadians.
