La Liga giants Atletico Madrid have ‘called to enquire’ about an Aston Villa defender who could move on from Villa Park and would be more affordable than a Liverpool star.
Diego Simeone’s side are looking to shop in the Premier League and have been exploring a swoop to land Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson.
The Spanish side have also identified a possible reinforcement at Aston Villa and have made moves.
Lucas Digne is the player that is under the scanner at Atletico Madrid and, according to Radio Marca, the club have ‘called to enquire’ about the Frenchman.
He could depart Aston Villa this summer, with just a year left on his deal.
While Liverpool defender Robertson is a player that Atletico Madrid like, it is suggested Digne could be a more affordable option.
The suggestion is that the full-back could ‘arrive at a good price’.
Digne admitted recently that he is unsure about his future at Aston Villa, even though he is happy at the Premier League club.
A move to La Liga could well be something which would appeal to the defender as it would keep him in a top European league and also at a top European club.
Atletico Madrid also have Champions League football on the agenda for next term, unlike Aston Villa, who missed out on a top five spot in the recent campaign.
Digne is due to turn 32 years old next month and Aston Villa may view his departure as beneficial as it would bring in cash at a time they are looking to balance the books for PSR purposes.
If Atletico Madrid move for Digne though, a switch for Liverpool’s Robertson to the Spanish side would look to be unlikely.
Liverpool are set to sign left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth and Robertson has been tipped not to stick around for long if he becomes the second choice at Anfield.
