Flamengo’s young right-back Wesley appears set for a high-profile move to Roma with Cafu, one of Brazil’s legendary full-backs and an icon for both Roma and Milan, offering a public endorsement of the transfer, according to Lance.

Negotiations between Flamengo and Roma have accelerated in recent days. The Italian side initially had a €22 million offer rejected, but have now returned with a package worth €25 million—precisely the value Flamengo had targeted for the 21-year-old. With this improved offer on the table, the deal looks likely to be finalised shortly.

When asked by Gazzetta dello Sport for his assessment of Wesley, Cafu was unequivocal. “Roma couldn’t have made a better choice: Wesley is strong, young, and has become a starter at Flamengo, as well as earning a call-up to the national team. The future is his,” the former Brazil captain stated.

Cafu highlighted Wesley’s blend of physical presence and attacking drive, pointing out his confidence on the ball and character on the pitch. “He’s very strong in attack, has personality, and likes to play as part of the team. He’s got a good physical profile and can’t be stopped easily when going forward. At the moment, in Brazil, he’s the best signing you can make for that position,” Cafu concluded.

Should the transfer go through, Wesley would join Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad in Rome. The newly appointed manager, coming off a long and successful spell at Atalanta, is renowned for deploying an expansive system that utilises full-backs in advanced roles. Cafu himself recognised this tactical fit: “Gasperini is one of the best Italian coaches; he understands the importance of the players out wide and makes the most of their characteristics.”

Elsewhere, Milan are also scouring the market for a right-back and have turned their attention to Vanderson, recently capped for the Brazilian national team and now at Monaco. Cafu also approved of Vanderson’s profile, crediting his strong season in Ligue 1 and his increasing value for Brazil. “He’s coming off a fantastic season and can keep improving. He’s a starter for Ancelotti’s national team. Vanderson is top.”

With the move for Wesley nearing completion, Flamengo could soon be without one of their most promising academy products. For the player, the transition would be a huge step up, and with Cafu’s ringing endorsement, expectations for Wesley in Serie A are already being set high.
