According to Tubantia journalist Leon ten Voorde, the Clarets are hoping that the forward’s performances for the Netherlands at Euro 2024 will help boost his valuation.

Weghorst was picked as part of Ronald Koeman’s squad for the national team as they eye a first triumph in the competition since 1988.

The 31-year-old made a bright start to this edition of the tournament, coming off the bench to earn the Netherlands a 2-1 win over Poland in their opening group game.

His 83rd minute strike sealed an important three points for Koeman’s side, moving them one step closer to earning a place in the knock-out rounds.

Wout Weghorst’s Burnley future

Weghorst has one year remaining on his current Burnley contract, and has returned to the club following a loan spell at German side Hoffenheim.

The Dutchman was an important player for the Bundesliga outfit, helping the team finish seventh in the top flight table.

The veteran forward contributed seven goals and three assists, as Hoffenheim qualified for the Europa League.

FC Twente are now interested in bringing the national team striker back to his native country this summer, but are willing to play a waiting game given his current duty at the European Championship.

It has been claimed that the player’s performances on the big stage have helped to increase his transfer value, which plays into the hands of Burnley.

The Lancashire outfit are without a manager, which also raises uncertainty over his immediate future, with Vincent Kompany having departed Turf Moor for Bayern Munich.

It is expected that Twente will make a pursuit for Weghorst, but they are also weighing up alternative options in the market in case he proves to be too expensive.

Wout Weghorst’s Burnley career

Weghorst signed for Burnley in the 2022 January transfer window, with Sean Dyche looking to keep the club in the Premier League.

He scored two goals from 20 appearances in the top flight, with the Clarets suffering relegation to the Championship.

This relegation led to his loan move to Besiktas, which later led to him moving to Manchester United on a temporary basis for the second half of 2022/23.

Burnley gained promotion back to the first division last year, but Weghorst was again loaned out, moving to Hoffenheim for the campaign.

His future with the Championship side is now unclear again following their relegation to the second tier.

Weghorst sale could raise good funds for Burnley

If Twente join the race to sign Weghorst, then Burnley should look to cash in on the Dutch forward this summer.

He has not featured for the club in two years, so his exit wouldn’t be too big of a blow, and it would free up wages and raise funds through a sale.

While the new manager should get a say in the next step taken, a sale makes the most sense given he has just one year remaining on his current contract.

Letting that run into the final 12 months risks losing him for nothing in 2025, which would be a real waste for Burnley.
