Bristol City goalkeeper Fran Bentley says she is determined to use her experience to drive the club toward promotion in the upcoming Barclays Women’s Championship season.
Fran Bentley admitted that last season was a struggle for both her and the team but she sees this campaign as a chance to reset.
Speaking recently, Bentley admitted that last season was a struggle for both her and the team but she sees this campaign as a chance to reset.
“It was a disappointing season both personally and as a team,” she said.
“Sometimes things don’t click and I think we are now just looking for a fresh start. I’m really excited to see how things go this season.
“We’ve got lots of new exciting things going on and big ambitions. Hopefully, we will be pushing for promotion.”
Bentley has already experienced success in the Championship with Bristol City. She explained that lifting the trophy in 2023 gave her valuable insight into what it takes to secure promotion and she now feels ready to pass that knowledge on.
“When I first won it, I was such a young player and was looking at some of the more experienced players for help. It’s nice to have been through it and to now feel like I can be one of the people others can turn to. Each season is different but I know that with the experiences we’ve all had we can push for promotion again.”
This season’s Championship looks stronger than ever with big signings across the league. Bristol City have been busy themselves, adding proven quality in midfielder Sophie Ingle and former Barcelona captain Vicky Losada. Bentley believes arrivals of that calibre show how ambitious the club is.
“Big signings are always great. I know that the ambitions of the club are to push for promotion. The more talented players that we can get around us the better because it will improve everyone day to day.”
Last year, the Robins finished sixth in the WSL2. The target for this season is clear; to challenge for promotion at the second attempt following their relegation in 2024.
With experienced additions, a new head coach and Bentley’s leadership in goal the foundations are in place.
Bristol City start their season against Birmingham City on Sunday, September 7th. Their opening month also includes games against Portsmouth, Southampton and Nottingham Forest.
