A breakthrough on the winger’s contract situation.

Eight weeks ago at the start of August, George Caulkin revealed (see below) that Newcastle United were going into contract talks with Anthony Gordon and his representatives.

The club wanting to reward the winger for an exceptional season where he had been named Newcastle United player of the season, reaching double figures on both Premier League goals and assists. Plus of course, more importantly, tie him down on a longer contract that will protect the club even more in helping to keep one of their best players, whilst at the same time reassuring Anthony Gordon that the club properly value him.

It is The Mail who have the new exclusive, with Craig Hope reporting that his information is that a breakthrough has now been made in negotiations and that Anthony Gordon is on the brink of signing a new enhanced and extended contract.

The starting point in the negotiations was the player’s representatives asking for a new deal that would make him the club’s very highest wage earner, which for sure, they would have known was never going to happen. However, when going into any negotiations, that is standard practice, you never start at the figure you hope to get, you always go higher so that you have a position to come down from as a compromise.

The man from The Mail saying that this has now happened, that Newcastle United and Anthony Gordon have now reached a compromise agreement, that doesn’t make him the very highest earner, but does give him a very significant pay rise on what was initially agreed 20 months ago when he signed from Everton as a 21 year old who had achieved very little by that point. Bruno Guimaraes remaining as the top wage earner but Anthony Gordon now moving a lot further towards the Brazil international in terms of salary.

Getting on for two years later and after an initial settling in period, Anthony Gordon having that stellar season for Newcastle United and now looking set to be a regular under Lee Carsley in the England team.

A lot of over the top criticism of Anthony Gordon and of course pretty much every other Newcastle United player, from both the media and a number of Newcastle fans. Like the team overall, Gordon hasn’t hit the consistent high standards of last season as yet, but he has been far from as bad as some are making out.

Just like the team overall, Anthony Gordon impressing in patches of games and for example, he was brilliant in that first half at Wolves and that was despite no protection from the woeful referee as the home players lined up to cynically foul the winger without any yellow cards that should have been produced.

Interesting to look as well at this very revealing updated  table from The Other 14, which proves just how well Anthony Gordon has still done, up to a point, even if not matching how good he was last season, yet! Only three Premier League players this season have created more chances (not including set-pieces) than the NUFC winger.

With Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton having signed new extended and enhanced contracts in the past 12 months, it had been widely reported that the club’s intention was to do everything they could to get Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak to do the same, despite still a number of years left still on their contracts (see below).

Here’s hoping for an official announcement very soon on this new Anthony Gordon contract and then Alexander Isak hopefully to swiftly follow.

It has now been revealed that Newcastle United will go into contract talks with Anthony Gordon and his representatives next week.

The news comes from the very reliable George Caulkin of The Athletic.

He reports that when Anthony Gordon returns from his extended summer leave due to involvement with England this summer at the Euros, the club will offer him an enhanced and extended new contract.

The man from The Athletic saying that the new contract will reward the winger for his astonishing progress last season, that ended with him forcing his way into the England squad, having delivered double figures in terms of both goals and assists in the 2023/24 Premier League season.

An extended contract will of course also strengthen Newcastle United’s position with the player, however, there is absolutely no pressure as things stand on that front for Eddie Howe and the Newcastle United owners. As Anthony Gordon signed what was described as a ‘long-term’ deal 18 months ago, the player reported to still have four years left on this existing Newcastle United contract.

Obviously any increase on the length of time remaining on his NUFC contract can only be a positive.

Eddie Howe recently talked about Anthony Gordon and about the player’s commitment to Newcastle United, as well as the short-term issue that needed to be solved, in terms of the PSR deadline of 30 June 2024. United needing to raise £50m+ to ensure they stayed within the rules, young squad players Anderson and Minteh sold for a combined £68m, though United had of course United had been forced to look at the hypotheticals. As in, if they couldn’t sell squad players to solve that short-term financial problem, they could have had to potentially sell a first-team player, such as Anthony Gordon or whoever.

Eddie Howe:

“Anthony Gordon is such an important player for us.

“We didn’t want to lose anybody (from the first-team).

“Why would we want to lose our best players?

“We fought really hard to make the right decisions.

“In those last few weeks (before the June 30 PSR deadline), it was very, very difficult.

“Anthony Gordon an integral part of what we’re doing.

“I’m confident he is OK.

“I think you can only judge Anthony on what he has given Newcastle on the pitch.
