Brighton’s season has fizzled out across the run-in with one win in nine Premier League games having ended hopes of European football. The Seagulls are 10th in the table and can secure a top-half finish for the third successive season with a win at the Amex Stadium.

It’s been an okay campaign for Brighton, who lost key figures Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister last summer, while names such as Kaoru Mitoma and Solly March have spent extended spells on the sidelines. The fear will be how Brighton can continue overachieving, if their lauded recruitment model begins to falter.

Roberto De Zerbi’s future also remains unclear as the Italian continues to be linked with an exit and the 44-year-old is said to feature on Bayern Munich’s shortlist of replacements for Thomas Tuchel, following a disastrous search for a successor to date.

Brighton are keen to retain experience in their young squad and have re-signed veteran duo James Milner and Danny Welbeck to new deals, though Adam Lallana will leave the South Coast at the end of the campaign.

Manchester United kept alive their hopes of European football with a 3-2 win over Newcastle in midweek. It was a welcome return to winning ways for the Red Devils, after successive losses to Crystal Palace and Arsenal had derailed their European hopes.

Erik ten Hag’s team trail Newcastle on goal difference but will secure a place in the Premier League’s top seven, and guaranteed European football, if they can better the Magpies’ result at Brentford on the final weekend.

The win over Newcastle was pleasing for Ten Hag and pointed towards a brighter future, with goalscorers Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund all aged 21 or under.

Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford will hope to return to the starting side as each attempt to prove their form and fitness ahead of next weekend’s FA Cup final.

Last Meeting

Manchester United 1-3 Brighton, Premier League, September 16th 2023

Brighton have won each of the last four league meetings between the teams including a 3-1 success at Old Trafford in September. Danny Welbeck haunted his former side with the opening goal for the Seagulls, who doubled their lead through Pascal Gross shortly into the second half.

Joao Pedro came off the bench to add a third for Brighton, who were well worth the three points, with Hannibal Mejbri’s goal little consolation for the Red Devils on a humbling afternoon. The defeat was United’s first at home in 13 months as the Seagulls stunned the Theatre of Dreams.
