Brighton & Hove Albion are closing in on a deal to sign Watford striker Joao Pedro, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The clubs have reportedly reached an agreement in principle for the versatile forward, with Brighton already sorting out personal terms with the player’s camp.

The Seagulls have moved swiftly to snap up the Brazilian ahead of the summer transfer window amid interest from several other Premier League clubs.

Pedro was part of the Watford squad relegated from the English top flight last season, with the striker’s three goals and one assist in 28 league games not enough to help his side survive the drop.

His goal contribution numbers have significantly improved in the Championship this season, with the 21-year-old bagging 11 goals and four assists in 35 games.

However, his form in front of goal has done little to help Watford earn a swift return to the top flight, with Chris Wilder’s side languishing in mid-table in the Championship rankings.

Pedro’s form for the struggling Hornets has not gone unnoticed, with Brighton now one step away from completing a move for the former Fluminense man.

Pedro was on the cusp of joining Newcastle United last summer, with the Magpies seeing two bids for the striker thrown out before striking a deal with Watford at the third time of asking.

However, a move did not materialise, and the forward remained at Vicarage Road.

He could soon get his long-awaited return to the Premier League by joining Roberto De Zerbi’s side and could be playing on the continental stage next season if the Seagulls succeed in their quest for a European finish.

Their hopes took a hit following the shock 3-1 defeat against relegation-battling Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in midweek.

However, they remain five points adrift of the Europa Conference League spot, having played three fewer games than sixth-placed Aston Villa.
