Brentford have had a club-record offer of £45 million rejected for Borussia Dortmund forward Maximilian Beier, according to The Athletic.

The fee would have comfortably surpassed Brentford’s recent £37m outlay on Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth earlier this month.

Brentford’s interest has been triggered due to the uncertainty surrounding Yoane Wissa, who is pushing for a move to Newcastle United.

The Magpies have already had two offers turned down, with the 28-year-old missing Brentford’s opening two matches of the season and set to be absent again this weekend.#

Beier is one of Germany’s most exciting young forwards, catching the attention of Aston Villa and Brentford.

After scoring 16 goals in the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim, he earned a €28.5 million move to Dortmund last summer.

He tallied 10 goals and six assists across 46 appearances in his debut campaign, despite being used in multiple positions.

Beier played as a winger and occasionally as a wing-back. The German international began Dortmund’s season in the DFB-Pokal.

However, he was left on the bench during their 3-3 Bundesliga opener against St Pauli, with Serhou Guirassy preferred to lead the line.

While his flexibility across the frontline makes him a valuable asset, there are doubts about his ability to spearhead an attack in the Premier League.

Beier has not yet proven he can consistently dominate as a central striker, and Brentford’s bid is a gamble on his potential rather than his current output.

For that price, the Bees may be paying over the odds for a player who is still learning how to become a striker.
