Manchester United recently suffered a huge setback as Lisandro Martinez sustained a serious knee injury against Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

In the Argentine’s absence, Luke Shaw could have an extended role from the left centre-back position.

The 29-year-old was reportedly in danger of being sidelined for four weeks after suffering a fresh setback in his recovery from a muscular problem.

However, this has been dismissed by the Daily Mail’s Chris Wheeler. He said that the injury is not too serious and Shaw could be back in first-team training next week.

The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath has added that the Englishman will return to training on Monday. He will miss the FA Cup fourth-round tie against Leicester City.

United handed a massive boost after Shaw’s injury scare

The £27 million signing has had countless injury concerns over the past decade at United. The trend has continued this term. He picked up an issue during pre-season.

The left-back returned to training under manager Ruben Amorim but sustained another setback. A new injury scare was reported today, but that does not appear to be the case.

The news is a huge boost for the Red Devils, considering Amorim may want a left-footed defender on the left side of the back three. Shaw has already trained in the position.

Teenagers Ayden Heaven and Godwill Kukonki are other left-footed alternatives, but the manager is unlikely to play them at this stage of the season.

If Amorim opts for a right-footer, Leny Yoro or Noussair Mazraoui could feature on the left side of the back three.
