Bolton Wanderers are preparing for their first full season under Steven Schumacher’s rule.
A disappointing 2024/25 campaign saw the Trotters finish eighth in League One, a substantial drop-off from the third place achieved the previous year.
Former boss Ian Evatt was relieved of his duties at the Toughsheet Community Stadium in January, once it became increasingly apparent that the club weren’t going to realise their promotion ambitions.
Bolton haven’t wasted any time getting transfer business done this summer, with Thierry Gale, Xavier Simons, Sam Dalby, Richard Taylor, Charlie Warren, Amario Cozier-Duberry and Teddy Sharman-Lowe all joining Wanderers.
Schumacher has also allowed senior figures such as Ricardo Santos, Gethin Jones and Nathan Baxter to leave the club, with Luke Southwood and Aaron Collins also being sold on.
As the transfer window rolls on, Football League World’s Bolton Wanderers fan pundit, Liam O'Meara, has highlighted one player within the Trotters’ fold who could do with a temporary move away this summer.
“The young striker, David Abimbola, would be a prime person to go out on loan,” stated Liam. “He featured in the first-team towards the back end of last season and looked good.
“He put himself about, looked strong and seemed to really try and take the game to the opposition. He could do with a run in the starting XI for somebody, a bit like how Max Conway developed with Crewe Alexandra last season.
“So, David Abimbola would be my pick to go out on loan. I think a National League team would be ideal for him.
“I think that would be his initial level, and then we could take a view in January, depending on how he's getting on there.
“It'd be as local as possible, that would be nice for him as well.”
Abimbola made four appearances for Bolton last season, starting in the Trotters’ 4-2 defeat to Lincoln City in April.
The 18-year-old striker had already scored 24 goals for Wanderers’ youth side by mid-April last term, which earned him a promotion to the senior side.
Abimbola has promising physical attributes, standing in excess of 6ft tall and possessing immense strength for a player of his age.
A temporary move away from the Toughsheet Community Stadium next season would allow the youngster to acclimatise more to the senior game, and boost his chances of breaking into the first-team in the years to come.
Bolton boss Schumacher is clearly impressed by the raw mold of Abimbola after giving him minutes last term, which indicates that the young striker could be part of the manager’s future plans.
Therefore, a successful loan might just be exactly what the teenager needs at this point in his development.
