Boca Juniors' Copa Libertadores campaign has come crashing down after a penalty shootout defeat to Alianza Lima in the qualifying stage.

Scorers: Trauco (OG) 5', Zenón 59 ; Barcos 19'

It was an all-action start from Boca and they looked as if they could blow their visitors away in the opening 10 minutes, but it required a stroke of luck when a Miguel Trauco own-goal pulled the hosts back into the tie.

But after taking their foot off the accelerator, Boca were punished when veteran striker Hernán Barcos headed home from a corner to put Alianza Lima back in front on aggregate.

While after the break it felt like there was more time spent in physical altercations than football played, Boca did manage to pull level on aggregate thanks to a scrappy Kevin Zenón header at the back post.

Somehow, Alianza Lima survived in the eighth minute of stoppage-time when Edinson Cavani missed an open net from mere feet out, sending the tie to penalties.

The two sides were clinical in the shootout, but a miss from Boca man Alan Velasco decided it, seeing Alianza Lima move onto square off with Chilean outfit Iquique.
