In League One – the third tier of English football – there was action for Spurs loanees Josh Keeley, Jamie Donley, and their Leyton Orient side, as they faced Blackpool on the road. Heading into the game, the O’s had lost their five previous games in the league.
As usual, Keeley was named in the starting XI by manager Richie Wellens, though Donley was rotated and named on the bench for this one. It was Keeley’s 27th League One start of the season, and 32nd in all competitions.
Just before the half hour mark, Orient took the lead, a goal that was good enough to have them in front as the sides went into the half time interval. On the hour mark, Donley was introduced to the action.
Unfortunately, barely a minute later the hosts equalised, and things were back level. However, that only lasted for two more minutes, as Orient retook the lead after 63 minutes, with striker Charlie Kelman scoring his second goal of the game.
In an end to end game, it was a nervy end – but Wellens’ side were able to see the game out to secure their first win since the 18th of February, as they stop the rot of five straight defeats with a much needed three points here.
The possession count was exactly 50-50, whilst both sides had five Opta defined big chances, so this was a game that certainly could have gone either way. With that amount of big chances for the hosts, as well as 22 total chances, Keeley was a busy man in the Orient goal – making seven saves across the game to play his part in the win. He also completed 15 accurate long balls.
These three points leaves the Spurs loanees’ side in 9th place in League One, with 57 points from their 37 games – four points off the play offs. Sure, anyone can say “if we won these games we’d be better off”, but if Orient’s form in the previous five games was just even below average, they’d be in such a good position. Even four points from those five games would have them in the top six – a shame, but it is not over yet.
Next up is an away game against Mansfield Town next Saturday – the side of Matthew Craig, whom was again not involved as they beat Barnsley 2-1 earlier. Neither Keeley or Donley appear to have an age group call up, so looks like they will be able to play in this one. 15:00 GMT kick off.
