Aston Villa have made it clear their captain is going nowhere. According to Sky Sports, the club have rejected an £18 million offer from Everton for John McGinn, underlining their intent to retain the core of their side ahead of another European campaign and Premier League season.

David Moyes, eager to inject experience and leadership into his Everton squad, had identified McGinn as a top priority. “McGinn is a priority target,” Sky Sports report, with Moyes valuing his “leadership, experience and versatility”.

However, Villa’s stance is unwavering. The 30-year-old is under contract until 2027, and his influence on and off the pitch is seen as vital by Unai Emery.
Newcastle are also understood to be admirers of McGinn, although no formal contact has been made. With both domestic and European commitments looming, Eddie Howe is weighing options to reinforce his midfield. McGinn’s high energy and tactical flexibility would be a fit, but Villa have shown no sign of compromise.

McGinn’s 49 appearances last season underline his importance. Four goals, six assists and a relentless engine across competitions only add to his value.
For now, Villa are holding the line, and McGinn remains their midfield general.
For Everton supporters, this development feels like another missed opportunity in a summer that already feels underwhelming. John McGinn was never just a name on a shortlist. He was a leader, a voice, someone who could bring identity and drive to a midfield that has looked anonymous for too long.
£18 million won’t get you far in today’s market, but the club’s valuation seemed realistic for a player entering his thirties. What will hurt more is the sense that they moved early, moved clearly, and still got nowhere. Villa’s ambition is clear. Everton’s? Less so.
Yes, McGinn has 2 years left on his contract. Yes, Villa are in Europe and Everton are not. But that doesn’t mean Everton should walk away. If Moyes really sees him as a priority, then Everton should push harder. Because what’s the plan otherwise? Wait for a cut-price option and hope they settle? Hope Beto turns playmaker?
They’ve lost leaders like Seamus Coleman to age and injury. They cannot afford to lose out on potential replacements through indecision or hesitation. McGinn might not be glamorous, but he’s what Everton need.
