A massive win for Juventus Women First team who leave the Stadio Tre Fontane in Rome with all three points following a 2-1 victory on matchday five of the Women’s Serie A Poule Scudetto. Emma Stolen Godo and Sofia Cantore's goals secured victory for Juve away against the Giallorosse, giving them three very important points in the league standings.
The Bianconere dominated the early stages both technically and physically, and in fact after just a few seconds the first huge chance of the game was created by Cantore who put it on a plate for Abi Brighton to tap-in inside the six-yard box, but she was unable to convert the chance and give Juve an early lead. Juventus Women's domination, however, paid off in the ninth minute with a wonderful finish from outside the box by Stolen Godo that clipped the inside of the post on its way past Camelia Ceasar. On the quarter of an hour mark the Bianconere came close to doubling their lead through Emma Kullberg who headed a corner kick goalwards but was denied a great goal by a goal-line clearance. In the middle of the first period the home team began to provide more of an attacking threat but Stolen Godo was once again at the heart of proceedings to make two decisive blocks to first deny Emilie Haavi and then Manuela Giugliano. On the 31st minute Massimiliano Canzi's team found the second goal through the prolific Cantore who, as Juve pressed high, snatched the ball from Elena Linari's feet before bearing down on goal and unleashing a powerful right-footed shot under the crossbar. The last chance of the first half fell to Kullberg, who found herself in behind the Roma defence and drove into the opposing penalty area, but she was unable to find the target with her effort on goal.
The second half began with two chances for goal for the Bianconere who, first with a header from Stolen Godo and then with a shot from Brighton, were unable to find a way past by the Giallorosse goalkeeper. Roma tried to test Pauline Peyraud-Magnin with three efforts around the hour mark, two of which were dealt with comfortably by PPM, whilst the other missed the target. The Juve shot-stopper was called into action again 15 minutes from the end, as she tipped Giugliano’s free-kick from the edge of the area over the crossbar. In the 83rd minute, however, Peyraud-Magnin could do nothing about Valentina Giacinti's right-footed shot that halved the deficit to make it 2-1. In the final minutes of the match the Bianconere showed great organisation and character to resist Roma’s attacks, thus snatching a vital away victory.
“After three difficult games in which we did not win, we managed to do it at the most important time and that was really good. We did not put in one our best performances but today what was really important was to bring home the result. I am very proud of the girls.”
"I couldn't have asked for a better comeback: if I had to think about it I would have chosen just such a match, these are the kind of matches that provide extra motivation. I was very calm because I have great confidence in my teammates. I didn't think I would play 90 minutes honestly, but in the end we needed to defend well and we couldn't throw the result away. We suffered a bit in the second half but it was important to bring home the victory, games are also won this way and I am very happy for the team because they are three very important points."
