Berlin omitted as Germany confirm host cities for Women’s Euro 2029 bid | OneFootball

Germany has confirmed the eight host cities that will be included in their bid to stage Women’s Euro 2029.

The German Football Federation confirmed that Cologne, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hanover, Leipzig, Munich, and Wolfsburg will host games at the tournament if they win their bid to stage the tournament.

Berlin, Gelsenkirchen, and Rostock also submitted interest in staging matches but were left off the bid.

If Germany’s bid prevails it will be the third time that they have hosted the Women’s Euros. They previously held the tournament in 1989 and 2001 – winning both tournaments as hosts.

Berlin was also not part of those tournaments. That is despite being a host city for the men’s 2006 World Cup and Euro 2024 events – with both finals being played in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.

Explaining the decision to omit Berlin, Sabine Beikler, spokesperson for the Senate Department for Interior, Digitalisation and Sport, said: “Berlin is not prepared to take financial and contractual risks as part of the bid.”

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf added: “We believe we have selected the right host cities and that this line-up gives us a strong chance in the race to host the Women’s EURO 2029.

“It was impressive to see just how much effort and enthusiasm each of the applicants brought to the table – among eleven strong cities and stadiums, we were able to identify eight that truly stood out in the final phase of the national process.”

Which countries are bidding for Women’s Euro 2029?

Germany was one of five bids which was submitted by the September 24, 2024, deadline to host Women’s Euro 2029.

Poland, Sweden, and Italy all put in individual bids to stage the tournament in four years time.

Meanwhile, Denmark and Sweden have also put in a joint bid to stage the tournament.

Poland also put in a bid to stage the Women’s Euro 2025, while Denmark and Sweden put in a bid alongside Finland and Norway.

Italy are already set to host the men’s Euro 2032 tournament alongside Turkey.

All five bids will have to submit their final dossier by August 28th, with the hosts for Women’s Euro 2029 expected to be announced around December.

When does Euro 2025 start?

Before the hosts for Euro 2029 get decided, England will look to defend their European Championship trophy at Women’s Euro 2025 in Switzerland this summer.

The Euro 2025 fixture schedule begins on July 2nd with Iceland taking on Finland, and hosts Switzerland playing Norway.

Sarina Wiegman’s side start their campaign on July 5th against France, in a group that also consists of the Netherlands and Wales.
