Manchester United have been lacklustre in attack this season and need fresh reinforcements to reignite their offensive spark.
United have scored nine goals in ten league games this term – only Crystal Palace (8) and Southampton (7) have netted fewer goals.
Despite creating several big chances, they have faltered in front of goal.
As Ruben Amorim prepares to take charge, he faces a daunting challenge to restore the team’s goalscoring touch.
Former United striker Dimitar Berbatov has predicted Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres will follow in Amorim’s footsteps and move to United.
He said on Sky Sports: “This guy, Viktor Gyokeres is scoring goals for fun right now, so I think there is a special connection with him and the coach.
“So maybe, we are probably going to see him in a United shirt at one point.
“From what he’s showing right now, I think yes, because our strikers at the moment are not producing – 18th in the league for scoring goals is embarrassing for the stature of a club like United.”
Gyokeres is in scintillating form this season, bagging 20 goals and four assists in 16 games across all competitions.
The £58 million-rated centre-forward has thrived under Amorim. He has made 66 appearances, netting an impressive 63 goals and providing 23 assists.
He would have received the adulation he so richly deserves if he was playing in a more popular league.
Erik ten Hag signed several players who starred under his watch at Ajax. Amorim could also do the same.
Rasmus Hojlund has the potential to flourish, but he needs support from another striker to ease his burden.
Joshua Zirkzee was brought in with the expectation of fulfilling that role, but he has struggled to deliver the quality required.
