Ben Chilwell has had a season to forget at Chelsea with the defender’s time at the west Londoners coming to an end.

The 28-year-old has played only once for Enzo Maresca’s side this campaign after falling out of favour with the Italian. Chilwell had an injury-hit 2023/24 season, playing only 21 times under Mauricio Pochettino and his 45-minute cameo against Barrow in the Carabao Cup are the only minutes the former Leicester defender has had in 2024/25.

With the January transfer window now open, a move away from Chelsea would be beneficial for both parties with their relationship ending on a somewhat sour note.

Here are some teams that should look to sign Chilwell this January.

Manchester United

Whilst aiding a direct rival will not be ideal, Manchester United is a club in need of wingbacks to suit the style of Ruben Amorim. Chilwell would offer the Portuguese exactly what he wants from his wingbacks, who often play high up the pitch and act as the main outlets as the attackers go into central areas. United would allow Chilwell to continue playing at the highest level with European football still at Old Trafford.

Tottenham

Tottenham are in an injury crisis and were dealt a huge blow when left-back Destiny Udogie was ruled out for several weeks with a hamstring injury. Spurs play with a back four under Ange Postecoglou but with their high line and overlapping fullbacks, this is another formation that would suit Chilwell’s strength. But with Spurs another of Chelsea’s rivals, this move would again seem unlikely.

Borussia Dortmund

A move away from England could be an option for Chilwell to explore, and Borussia Dortmund would be an interesting team to sign for. Under the management of former Liverpool player Nuri Sahin, last season’s Champions League finalists Dortmund find themselves sixth in the Bundesliga and limited at fullback. Chilwell would be an upgrade on current left back Ramy Bensebaini and would follow in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham in experiencing football overseas.

Strasbourg

The simplest move for Chilwell as Strasbourg are one of Chelsea’s sister teams as part of the multi-club ownership, but any transfer to Ligue 1 would mean the French club would need to send back one of the Blues’ players due to hitting the maximum amount of loan players at one club. By far the most wildcard option, it would allow Chilwell to show his talents away from England whilst still with the Chelsea family, Strasbourg would be a low-pressured environment for him to perform, and a return to a back three would be beneficial as well.
