Bologna’s Dutch centre-back Sam Beukema was full of praise for both Bologna and his boss Vincenzo Italiano, who he hopes won’t leave the club after triumphing in the Coppa Italia.

This season has been a particularly pertinent one for the Emilia-Romagna club. Although the Rossoblù may not have managed to qualify for the Champions League, they lifted the Coppa Italia after beating AC Milan 1-0, bringing it back to the city after 51 years away.

A key player in this term’s cult exploits was former Go Ahead Eagles and AZ Alkmaar defender Sam Beukema. He spoke about the victory in the Italian Cup to Sky Sports and detailed his experiences at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.

“Getting to the final in Rome was already a great thing, but obviously, once you get there, you want to win. We made history, you can still feel the emotion when you walk around the city. We won because we have a very united group, we are very close, and this is our strength.”

Speaking of the boss amidst rumours of departure, Beukema continued, “I have improved a lot with him, I hope he stays because he is very good, and in the end, I think he will stay. (…) I am very happy that the fans are affectionate towards me, this is like my second home.”
