Bayern Munich have made initial contact over the availability of Malo Gusto as they continue to scan the market for right-back reinforcements, according to FCBInside, referencing a report from L’Equipe. The 22-year-old Chelsea defender is understood to be among the names discussed at Säbener Straße, with Bayern gauging whether the France international could leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
Interest in Gusto is not sudden. Bayern had already considered the former Lyon right-back as a target back in winter 2022, but Gusto ultimately moved to Chelsea for a reported €30 million the following transfer window. Now under contract until 2030, Gusto is valued at around €35 million by Transfermarkt.
Despite the enquiry, a transfer remains in the exploratory phase. Bayern currently have three right-sided defenders on the books: Josip Stanišić, Konrad Laimer, and Sacha Boey. Club leadership does not see an urgent need for another right-back unless there is a departure in that area. Boey, who arrived from Galatasaray in January 2024 for €30 million, is considered the most likely to leave if any movement does take place. Reports suggest Marseille and his former club Galatasaray are among the interested parties, with Bayern likely to pursue a loan with an option or obligation to buy should he move on.
Bayern’s ideal scenario, according to FCBInside, is a structured exit for Boey, as his current market value is not expected to recover the sum the club spent earlier this year. Only if he departs would a fresh attempt for Gusto become a live topic.
For now, Bayern are merely positioning themselves, monitoring the market for developments on Gusto’s situation at Chelsea and their own squad dynamics. As things stand, unless a current right-back is sold or loaned, Bayern’s hierarchy see no pressing need to commit to a new addition on that flank. However, Gusto’s blend of age, athleticism, and tactical familiarity with Bundesliga-style football continues to make him a player of interest for the German champions, should the opportunity arise.
