Celtic will aim to overturn a 2-1 deficit when they visit Bayern Munich for the second leg of their Champions League knockout playoff tie on Tuesday at 8 PM.
Bayern Munich (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Laimer, Upamecano, Kim, Guerreiro; Kimmich, Pavlovic; Olise, Musiala, Sane; Kane
Celtic (4-3-3): Schmeichel; Johnston, Carter-Vickers, Trusty, Taylor; McGregor, Hatate, Engels; Maeda, Idah, Jota
Daizen Maeda scored late for the Bhoys, providing them with a lifeline after Michael Olise and Harry Kane put Bayern in control with goals either side of half-time. Celtic clawed their way back into the match with a scrappy goal from their Japanese forward, 11 minutes from time, following a corner.
Celtic pushed for an equalizer but could not find a way past Manuel Neuer in the closing stages, marking their first home defeat since December 2023 and ending a remarkable run of 32 unbeaten matches.
Olise, the former Crystal Palace winger, broke Celtic’s strong resistance just seconds before half-time with an unstoppable near-post strike. Kane then volleyed in unmarked at the back post four minutes after the restart.
“The last 25 minutes, we started to press the game and were more active at the top end of the pitch. You could see the aggression in our play. Our football came alive, and we got the goal,” Celtic head coach Brendan Rodgers told TNT Sports after the first leg. “At 2-1, Bayern Munich are hanging on. That’s the takeaway for us— we have one more shot.”
However, history is not in Celtic’s favour, as Bayern Munich have won their last five home European matches against Scottish teams and have never lost at home to a Scottish club (W7, D3).
Additionally, Celtic have been eliminated in their last nine major European knockout ties in which they lost the first leg, with their last successful comeback occurring against 1. FC Köln in the 1992-93 UEFA Cup (losing 0-2 in the first leg, winning 3-0 in the second leg). They have never advanced after losing the first leg at home, having faced that situation seven times previously.
The winners of this playoff tie will progress to face either Bayer Leverkusen or Atletico Madrid in the round of 16 next month.
Hiroki Ito, a summer signing who has been out since July 28 due to a broken metatarsal, made his debut for Bayern as a late substitute in Glasgow and started against German champions Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.
João Palhinha has missed the last three games because of illness. Alphonso Davies has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since January 22, and Daniel Peretz has been unavailable since January 8 due to a kidney issue.
On Friday, Bayern announced that Jamal Musiala has signed a contract extension until 2030, while Manuel Neuer (2026) and Alphonso Davies (2030) have also agreed to new deals.
Paulo Bernardo is expected to be sidelined for up to five weeks due to an ankle injury he sustained on February 8th. Meanwhile, James Forrest has returned to training after being out since the League Cup final because of a foot injury.
