The Bavarians created enough chances to beat Inter on Tuesday, but supersub Davide Frattesi gave the Serie A club an advantage before the return leg at San Siro. Bayern will now look to maintain their lead over Bayer Leverkusen with a win over Borussia Dortmund.
The Rekordmeister are winless in the last two fixtures against their fierce rivals. However, they managed to narrowly beat St. Pauli and Augsburg after difficult weeks in the Bundesliga opened the title race for the defending champions.
After the home defeat to Inter, the Bundesliga could be the only hope of finishing the season with a trophy for Vincent Kompany’s side. From the last six weeks of the league season, the game against Dortmund will certainly be their big test.
In the Bundesliga, Bayern only dropped points twice at home this season. Their unbeaten run ended with a surprise 3-2 defeat to Bochum last month. It’s also at the Allianz Arena that Bayern suffered a defeat that knocked them out of the DFB Pokal. Tuesday’s loss also put their European aspiration in real danger.
Team News
Kingsley Coman and Aleksander Pavlovic could make their long-awaited return in the big fixture. Meanwhile, Manuel Neuer, Dayot Upamecano and Jamal Musiala are definitely out of the game. Alphonso Davies and Hiroki Ito will not be back in Bayern’s squad before the start of next season.
Wins against Mainz and Freiburg – two teams sitting above them in the standings – changed the momentum for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga. However, they’re now back to a dire state after an awful display in the Champions League.
Repeating last season's success at the Allianz Arena could put them back on track before Tuesday’s return leg. Niko Kovac demands more from his players before yet another big clash for the Black and Yellows.
Dortmund only recorded four wins away from home, but three of them came since February. They’re also in search of winning three Bundesliga games in a row for the first time this season. With fourth-placed Mainz only five points ahead of last season’s Champions League finalists, Dortmund can still qualify for Europe’s premium competition via the league standings.
However, the race for Europe could involve half of the clubs with only three points separating Dortmund and 12th-placed Wolfsburg. From the remaining Bundesliga matchdays, Kovac’s team will face Leverkusen in the penultimate weekend.
Team News
Only Nico Schlotterbeck and Marcel Sabitzer will miss Dortmund’s trip to Allianz Arena. Despite his poor showing at Barcelona’s Olympic stadium, Serhou Guirassy will most certainly start a Bundesliga game for the first time since the return of the international break. Pascal Groß, who was suspended in the Champions League, is also available for selection.
