On Saturday afternoon, Bayern Munich hosted, second from bottom of the table, Holstein Kiel for matchday 20 of the ongoing Bundesliga season. Despite enjoying a six-game winning streak in domestic competition, Bayern has been far from perfect in their performances for most of the season.
Against the visitors on Saturday, it was no different. After a jittery start, Bayern eventually took control of the game and entered the half-time interval with a healthy 2-0 lead. Within the first ten minutes of the second half, Die Roten struck twice and seemingly put the result of the match beyond doubt with a commanding 4-0 lead.
However, the last half-hour of the match almost proved disastrous for Bayern as Holstein Kiel struck three times without reply, including twice in added time. The plucky visitors deserve credit for their resolve, but Vincent Kompany and his men should have avoided such a nervy ending to the match. Let us take a look at some key takeaways from Saturday’s surprisingly narrow 4-3 victory and why the Rekordmeister remains a work in progress under Vincent Kompany.
