When it rains, it pours. Bayern Munich cannot catch a break right now from an injury point of view. The Bavarian club suffered another setback on Saturday as Hiroki Ito was brought off the pitch due to injury against St. Pauli.
Ito has suffered an injury in the same foot that has troubled him this season. Bayern are yet to confirm the length of his spell on the sidelines. However, the updates from the German media are concerning.
According to Bild, Hiroki Ito will not play again this season. The Japanese defender is expected to spend months on the sidelines due to a metatarsal fracture. Die Roten will soon provide an update on the defender once all scans are done on Sunday.
It is a real shame for Ito and Bayern as the Japanese international has been getting back to his best after an injury-troubled start to life in Bavaria. He missed the entire first half of the season due to a foot injury. Ito returned to the squad in February after a couple of setbacks in the recovery process.
Ito provides cover in central defense and left-back positions, which are critical for Bayern, considering the situation of other defenders in the squad.
The Bavarian club suffered two major setbacks during the international break. Alphonso Davies suffered a serious knee injury while playing for Canada. He has undergone surgery to repair the damage in his knee. Davies has been ruled out for the season. The Canadian is expected to return from injury in October.
Dayot Upamecano was also injured during the international break. The French defender has been ruled out for six weeks. He will miss both games against Inter Milan and potentially the semi-final stage of the Champions League if Bayern qualify.
Upamecano and Davies have been Bayern’s best players in the back four in the defense. They have been performing consistently week in and week out for Die Roten. The absence of these two players has made Bayern’s dream of winning the Champions League title at Allianz Arena later this season even more challenging.
Die Roten currently have Eric Dier and Kim Min-jae as the only natural senior center-back options in the squad. They cannot afford to lose further players to injuries in the coming week. Kompany will have to rely on central defenders from the academy or have to play midfielders like Leon Goretzka, and Joao Palhinha in defense over the next couple of months.
