Plenty of eyes were cast on Hillsborough for the Yorkshire derby amid a mass boycott of the fixture from thousands of Wednesday supporters looking to oust the controversial Dejphon Chansiri from the S6 boardroom.

An off-season and pre-season of turmoil has led to Henrik Pedersen having to defy the odds in the Championship and EFL Cup with limited resources due to a mass exodus of experienced players, which led to the selection of nine Under-21 players in the starting lineup against Daniel Farke's newly-promoted outfit.

However, the youthful side guided by the likes of Bannan - who came on as a second-half substitute - Jamal Lowe and the recently recruited American goalkeeper, Ethan Horvath, managed to pull off one of the surprise results of the round, and they now wait to see who their latest opponents will be in tonight's draw.

A clash of these two historic, local rivals would normally bring a packed-out stadium with an extremely hostile atmosphere towards the Whites' players. However, there were only 7,801 in attendance at Hillsborough, with the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust urging supporters pre-game to boycott the fixture and donate the price of the matchday ticket to Sheffield Children's Hospital.

This led to supporters watching on in venues such as the Wadsley Bridge Working Mens' Club, and they were left extremely proud of their side from afar as, after standing firm against last season's Championship winners, they took the lead on 62 minutes as Karl Darlow turned a Jamal Lowe cross into his own net.

Despite a late equaliser from Jayden Bogle, the aforementioned Horvath was the man of the moment, producing a fine collection of stops in the second half and in the subsequent shootout, with Bannan, Ike Ugbo and Liam Palmer converting all the Owls' spot-kicks whilst Joel Piroe, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Sean Longstaff all missed for Leeds.

After a testing summer of uncertainty for players and staff, this was the second time in three days that Pedersen's men showcased their resilience after coming back from 2-0 down away to Wrexham last Saturday to salvage a point, with Bannan stating on his Instagram story post-match: "A credit to the club these young lads."

Sheffield Wednesday supporters will hope their side's mentality continues to shine amid off-field uncertainty

The current troubles at Hillsborough have been well-documented, with the aforementioned Lowe, who was named captain of the side, stating pre-match that "we completely understand what the fans are doing" in protest of Chansiri's day-to-day running of the club amid claims that he is seeking £100m in order to relinquish control.

Pedersen is also unable to add further depth to his threadbare squad until the owner proves to the EFL that he can pay their salaries on time after several instances of delayed payments in recent months, which has led to many associated with, and on the outside, feeling that those on the pitch are fighting a losing battle through no fault of their own.

However, it is clear that the youngsters who were thrust into the limelight against Leeds have the character to step-up when needed in the remaining 42 league games and however long the current cup run takes Wednesday.

The South Yorkshire side are back in league action on Saturday afternoon against Swansea City at Hillsborough as they look to go three matches unbeaten in all competitions and potentially claim a first Championship success of the campaign.
