Lazio coach Marco Baroni held his pre-match press conference on the eve of the club’s first Serie A fixture of the season against Venezia. The Biancocelesti will host the Venetians at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday at 20:45 CET.

The former Hellas Verona manager began his presser by confirming Mario Gila’s most recent injury. The Spaniard could be out of action for a few weeks.

We arrive in good shape and we have recovered some players. But unfortunately, Gila sustained an injury. Nevertheless, the team is fine. We are ready. It will be an exciting league and we must be up to the task.

Baroni also had some words of praise for his club’s new signings Boulaye Dia and Gaetano Castrovili.

Lazio has been searching for good players, and Dia is one of them. When we signed Noslin, we had Immobile with Castellanos at the time. So now the situation hasn’t changed for us. Boulaye has shown he can score goals, and not only in Italy. He’s always on the move and doesn’t give a reference point to his marker. Although I don’t like to talk about individuals, I’ll say a word about Castrovilli. He has vision, passing and shooting. He has goals in him and he’s working hard to find his optimal condition. I’m convinced that he’ll be 100% soon.

Baroni Lauds New Lazio Signings Dia & Noslin

The 60-year-old expects a difficult match against Venezia, and reveals he wants his team to seek vertical plays.

We will have some difficulties against Venezia as it’s always the case. So we need spirit and competitiveness while playing in front of our supporters. I have hardworking players but we must improve our finishing. This is one of the most difficult aspects in the game. We are working on it. When I talk about verticality, I try to show the solutions that are behind the defensive line. The team must not waste possession, but vertical plays are needed. This is especially is fundamental against teams that close the spaces.

Baroni revealed that the team’s objective for this season is to improve on the previous campaign.

We want to improve on last season’s result. We work hard to achieve important goals. The team must be ready on the field, this season, it has become my responsibility.

The Lazio coach revealed that Nuno Tavares’ condition must be evaluated following his recent return from injury.

Nuno is one of those to evaluate. The lad is fine, but I have to know how to manage him now, because he didn’t play any friendlies. He only had training sessions. He’s going strong, but certainly doens’t have 90 minutes in his legs.

Finally, Baroni urges Gustav Isaksen to relieve himself from the pressure and showcase his abilities.

Gustav is strong and now has to step up to the plate. Last season, he had a good player ahead of him [Felipe Anderson], I’m trying to free his mind. He has good legs and quality, but he has to lighten up. I often talk to the players about the joy of playing and taking the pitch without fear, with your head held high and with the right attitude. I am convinced that he will express his qualities.
