In light of recent events, the relationship between FC Barcelona and Marc-Andre ter Stegen is more strained than ever, reports MARCA.

The bond between the club captain and key figures at the institution has been severely damaged and things are at an all-time low.

Joan Garcia signing the catalyst

A few weeks ago, tensions rose following the signing of Joan Garcia and the decision to place Ter Stegen on the transfer market.

At 33 years old, Ter Stegen is no longer untouchable under Hansi Flick. In fact, he has become a somewhat uncomfortable presence at the club. The sporting department’s decision to bring in Garcia and renew Wojciech Szczesny left no room for him in the first-team plans.

Barcelona placed him on the market despite his status as captain, his role as a regular starter before last season’s knee injury, and a contract running until June 2028.

Ter Stegen did not take this lightly and made it clear to the club that he had no intention of leaving. Contrary to expectations in the club’s offices, the upcoming World Cup has not influenced his stance – he remains committed to staying.

His refusal to consider a move frustrated Barcelona, as his departure would have brought much-needed funds and significantly reduced the wage bill. He was one of the key names highlighted in the club’s list of potential departures.

Surgery statement causes further rift

Adding to this already tense situation is the controversy surrounding Ter Stegen’s recent announcement regarding his back surgery.

The goalkeeper published the news on his social media accounts before Barcelona had a chance to do so.

The veteran star also stated that he would be sidelined for only three months, implying that his absence would not qualify as long-term – meaning the club could not use his salary space to register other players.

Hours later, Barcelona released an official statement confirming Ter Stegen’s decision to undergo surgery but deliberately omitted any mention of recovery timelines.

Internally, the club believes such estimates should come only from medical professionals after the operation. According to team doctors, it is unlikely that he will return in three months, with estimates ranging from four to five months – enough to qualify as a long-term injury.

In some quarters of the club, there is a belief that Ter Stegen deliberately timed his announcement to put pressure on the club, further damaging an already fragile relationship.

As a result, serious discussions are now underway about whether he should continue as one of the team’s captains.
