Barcelona faced their second defeat of the 2024/25 La Liga season on Sunday night as they were beaten 1-0 by Real Sociedad away in San Sebastian.
The match had a major controversial moment, though, as Barça had found the back of the net in the game through Robert Lewandowski only for the strike to be ruled out for offside wrongfully.
The semi-automated VAR system got the call horribly wrong after mistaking the Real Sociedad defender’s foot to Lewandowski’s and calling offside when the Barcelona superstar was clearly on.
Manager Hansi Flick and several Barça stars expressed their displeasure about the call after the game.
Now, Raphinha has joined in with an ironic Instagram post to voice his frustration over the incident from last night’s game.
The Brazilian shared a story on Instagram where he posted a screenshot of the actual image, another of the technology’s rendering, and a pair of shoes with absurdly elongated tips, mocking that Lewandowski’s feet must be of such dimensions for him to be flagged offside.
The incident has raised doubts about the semi-automated offside system. However, it is worth noting that the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) provided their interpretation of the disallowed goal for Lewandowski in the 13th minute of the Real Sociedad-Barça match and justified the decision by indicating their agreement with the officiating of this play.
The CTA stated that there was no error in interpretation, nor did they observe any potential confusion of identity between Nayef Aguerd and Lewandowski by the machine.
