Wojciech Szczesny has been one of the unsung heroes of Barcelona’s season so far, coming into the team after an unexpected injury to Marc-Andre ter Stegen and finding his footing relatively quickly.
The Polish goalkeeper has been in great form despite having announced his retirement under a year ago and has had a hell of a ride since returning to competitive football. After all, he has won three titles with the club and has been crucial across all competitions.
Given the impact he has had, Barcelona are trying to keep Szczesny at the club beyond this season and have offered him a one-year extension with an option for another.
The 35-year-old custodian, for his part, has asked for time to discuss the matter with his family before making a final decision.
As relayed in a recent update by SPORT, Szczesny is expected to announce his decision this week. It will arrive even before Barcelona’s game against Athletic Club in all probability.
The club is optimistic that Szczesny will accept their proposal and stay at the club, especially given the importance he has enjoyed under Hansi Flick.

The player, however, is juggling a number of factors including his family and the fact that he will not be a regular starter next term.
Joan Laporta and Co. propose a two-year deal with the option of the player leaving even after just one season. They are even willing to negotiate on the economics and reach an agreement for all scenarios.
Szczesny is a loved figure in the dressing room and for the management and there is thus optimism that he will stay.
While Ter Stegen may start as the first-choice goalkeeper next season, moreover, Flick has always been one to reward quality over name and he thus has a good chance of retaking his place in the lineup.
Szczesny’s final decision will arrive soon, especially after discussing it with his wife and family.
