A head-turning story centering on Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski has come to the fore in Poland on Monday.

This, of course, comes in the midst of a tumultuous couple of weeks for the 36-year-old on the international front.

Lewandowski announced late last month that he had made the call not to make himself available to Poland for the country’s latest round of fixtures.

The veteran frontman cited a need for mental and physical rest as his reasoning.

Safe to say, however, that this explanation did not go down at all well in his home country…

Lewandowski was quickly targeted by a number of media outlets and personalities, for what was deemed by some to be a lack of commitment to the cause with Poland.

The animosity reached new heights altogether on Sunday night, when the former Bayern Munich man made public his call not to make himself available at international level so long as manager Michał Probierz remains in charge.

This came on the back of Probierz’s decision to strip Lewandowski of his role as captain.

And the latest word stemming from the Polish media will no doubt mark a further blow for the goalscorer on Monday…

This comes amid confirmation on the part of Diario Sport, citing Meczyki, that Lewandowski’s international teammates essentially celebrated the call to place the captain’s armband elsewhere:

After long growing fed up with the behaviour of the Barcelona standout, it is reported that:

‘The reaction of the players was unanimous and received with applause for the gesture that Probierz had made and that may mean the definitive goodbye of the most important player in Poland’s recent history.’
