Speaking on Radio MARCA, former Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper Santiago Canizares has claimed that Barcelona president Joan Laporta must face the consequences of the mess created by the club over the registration of Dani Olmo.

The former La Liga star questioned the methods and ways of the Blaugrana in how they had approached the entire registration matter, accusing them of trying to flout the rules put in place by La Liga.

“I think it is extremely serious. It is the result of the irresponsibility of people who have got used to flouting the rules of La Liga, which has now become serious and has said that it cannot allow what it denies to others,” said Canizares on the Olmo saga.

“Barça have gone to court, which is the lowest thing to do, but it didn’t work out… and thank goodness, because it would have dismantled the whole financial history that La Liga has by way of control,” he added.

“You can question that model of control, but you can’t allow a club to break the rule.”

Talking about Laporta in particular, Canizares remarked: “For me, he has lost all credibility. Previously he had Mateu Alemany, who knew how to do engineering with numbers, but now he is no longer there because he has been dispensed with.

“It is logical that there are associations calling for the resignation of the president.”

As has been reported, Olmo has a special clause in his contract which will allow him to leave Barcelona as a free agent in case of him not being registered.

On what he thinks the Spanish international will do in this situation, Canizares stated: “Well, I don’t know, but he can’t play for Barça…. What should he do? Well, he can’t be out of action for six months because of the negligence of some managers.

“We are talking about an important player. When you get injured for a month, you almost get depressed, so imagine six.”

The former goalkeeper also reminded that Pau Victor also finds himself in the same situation as Olmo, and added that there are going to be consequences against Laporta because of this entire fiasco.

“You don’t have to forget about Pau Victor, who is in the same situation. What happened is that they didn’t pay €60 million, like with Olmo. What has happened is very serious and I don’t need to imagine more tragedies,” he said.

“There are going to be consequences against Laporta because the members can’t look the other way. It’s very easy to look the other way and say that it’s others who want to screw them, but there came a time when there was no other way out.”
