Barcelona preparing fresh contract for vice-captain

Barcelona have made a habit out of last-minute deals in the transfer windows in recent years, but the only deals done in January were for their current crop of players. Gerard Martin, Ronald Araujo, Pedri and Gavi all penned new contracts in the space of eight days, securing the future of some of their key players. The next in line could be Raphinha.

The Blaugrana are believed to be working on improvements to the agreement they had to sign a new deal with Lamine Yamal once he turns 18 in the summer. One of his partners up front could receive a wage rise from the club before the summer though.

According to Sport, Barcelona are preparing to offer Raphinha a two-year extension to his contract, which currently expires in 2027. The Brazilian, who was selected by his teammates as vice-captain this season, would then receive a wage rise from 2026 onwards.

Raphinha has shown remarkable leadership since being given a regular role on the left-hand side, and this season has arguably been Barcelona’s best player, scoring 24 goals and giving 15 assists in 35 appearances. Those are, by a distance, his best ever figures in his career.

The 28-year-old would be 32 by the time that his contract expires if he does choose to extend it until 2029. One of the key questions may not be money for Raphinha though. After two summers in which Barcelona made it clear they would be willing to sell the Brazilian, he elected to stay and fight for his spot, determined to make a success of himself at Barcelona.

In spite of his form though, there continues to be plenty of talk that Barcelona are keen on signing a star winger on the left side, with Liverpool’s Luis Diaz and Athletic Club’s Nico Williams still linked to them. Raphinha may want to find out their plans before committing his future.
