Former Barcelona star Gerard Piqué on Wednesday made full use of the opportunity to take aim at Real Madrid.

The ex-defender took his place in front of the media alongside fellow countryman Iker Casillas this afternoon, at an event for Uber Eats.

During the discussion, a number of recent developments in La Liga were put to the pair, one of which came in the form of Real Madrid’s letter of complaint to the RFEF, in the aftermath of a controversial 1-0 defeat at the hands of Espanyol.

And Piqué did not hold back in his response, explaining:

“Real Madrid’s letter to RFEF? The statement is a complete smokescreen because they’ve been doing it for 120 years. Whenever things don’t go well for them, they turn on the ‘machinery’ and put pressure on media and referees.”

After Blancos legend Casillas suggested that the letter was ‘appropriate’, Piqué again hit back with:

“Of course, a former Madrid player. The commentators and referees are already from Madrid and now add players too!”

And the ex-Blaugrana man was not done there, either.

Turning focus towards the current crop of up-and-coming young talent in Spanish football, Piqué again took firm aim at those in a position of power at the Santiago Bernabéu:

“There is a lot of young talent in La Liga, which, in the case of Barcelona, comes from La Masia, and in the case of Real Madrid, through a chequebook.”
