Gerard Martin’s performances at left-back for FC Barcelona, particularly in recent weeks, have not gone unnoticed this season.
The former UD Cornella starlet stepped into the spotlight unexpectedly following Alejandro Balde’s injury and delivered solid displays in high-pressure matches.
Indeed, the 23-year-old youngster made his mark in the Copa del Rey final vs Real Madrid, the Champions League tie against Inter Milan, and the decisive La Liga clash against Los Blancos.
Martin renewed his contract with Barcelona in January, extending it until 2028 with a release clause set at €100 million.
Despite this extension – his previous contract was due to expire on 30 June – the left-back still has remained registered with the reserve team (Barça Atletic).
But, MARCA now reports that it will change this summer, with Martin set to be given a first-team registration for the next season.

It will also mean that the left-back will get a new shirt number reflecting his first-team status, having worn the #35 jersey in the ongoing campaign.
Signed from Cornella in 2023, Martin played for Barça Atletic last season but Hansi Flick’s coaching staff identified him during pre-season as a reliable backup for Alejandro Balde.
The numbers support Flick’s decision to promote Martin. Even though there have been a few missteps along the way, the 23-year-old left-back has recorded six assists and scored once – against Real Sociedad.
With the continued trust of the new coaching staff, Martin is set to play a long-term role at Barcelona and will be rewarded with a first-team registration and kit number come the 2025/26 season.
