According to a fresh report from SPORT, Barcelona are weighing up the option of appealing the Competition Committee’s controversial decision to withdraw Jude Bellingham’s red card.

The incident dates back to the fiery Copa del Rey final between Real Madrid and Barcelona, during which Bellingham was shown a red card after the final whistle for angrily protesting to the referee.

However, the Competition Committee later annulled the expulsion after re-evaluating the referee’s report and footage from the match, claiming there was no aggressive or intimidating behaviour from the Englishman.

Legal expert Miguel Galan has pointed out that the ruling is not neutral in its competitive consequences, particularly given that the annulment allows Bellingham to be available for the upcoming league Clasico.

Barcelona have points in their favour

What makes this more alarming from a Barça perspective is that the expulsion occurred in a direct clash with the Catalans.

The subsequent cancellation of the suspension removes a key penalty that would have otherwise sidelined one of Real Madrid’s most influential players for the next head-to-head encounter.

Barcelona’s legal standing to challenge the decision is reinforced by this direct link between the incident, its resolution, and their own sporting interests.

Galan argues that the Catalan club could reasonably claim legitimacy to at least request a thorough review, if not fully intervene in the process.

Bellingham can make or break the game

Allowing a pivotal player like Bellingham to feature in a high-stakes clash, after his red card was dismissed, could dramatically influence the final outcome of the league.

It is not simply a disciplinary technicality anymore, as it is about preserving fairness in competition.

Barça, as one of the key stakeholders affected by this decision, could rightly argue that the rules must be interpreted and enforced in a consistent and transparent manner.

As it stands, this latest ruling appears to benefit their direct title rivals while potentially undermining the sporting merit of La Liga’s most important match.
