AZ Alkmaar have announced the signing of young Mexican defender Mateo Chávez from Mexican giants Chivas. The 21-year-old full-back has signed a deal with the club until 2030 and is their first signing ahead of the 2025/2026 campaign. Chávez will bring left-back cover to the side for the upcoming campaign.
Chávez has played 33 games for Chivas in all competitions so far this season, and while he is yet to score, AZ fans will be happy to see that he has provided six assists. This has been a breakout season for the young defender, who played just 11 games during the 2023/2024 campaign. Chávez came through the sides youth set up and has also been capped at U23 by the Mexican national team.
With just one game to go in the Eredivisie season, Chávez will be hoping that his new club can secure European football for the 2025/2026 campaign. They currently sit in fifth and will be playing in the play-offs for the final European ticket. At the moment their opponents look to be NEC, although they could also face Heervenveen, Sparta Rotterdam, FC Groningen or PEC Zwolle depending on how the season ends on Sunday.
