Following last week’s shock 4-3 defeat, AZ Alkmaar are looking for a strong reaction against Ilves in the second leg of their Conference League second qualifying round. De Telegraaf’s Mike Verweij reflected briefly on the press conference ahead of the decisive second half of the tie on Thursday night.
AZ coach Maarten Martens told the gathered media, (we can turn it around) “By simply showing dedication, passion, and quality as soon as the referee blows the whistle.
“You need all that to energise each other and project something to the opposition. That’s what we’re focusing on. And then the results have to follow, because we realise we have to do much better.”
Jeroen Zoet also addressed the press, speaking of the embarrassing prior defeat. “I didn’t think about that. But it’s not like I was outdone. We all put in a performance that wasn’t good. And we’re very aware that things have to be completely different in the home game.”
