Antonio Di Salvo’s new-look Germany U21 squad has seen a slight emendation. Augsburg attacker Mert Kömür has departed DFB camp with a broken toe. In his place, VfL Wolfsburg left-back/wingback Aaron Zehnter will receive his first chance to represent Germany at the highest youth level. Both players are off to excellent club campaigns with their respective teams and both have scored Bundesliga goals.

Augsburg head coach Sandro Wagner has actually been using Kömür to spearhead the FCA attack. Working as a lead striker over the first two matchdays, Kömür has scored one goal and registered an assist. Kömür scored the 2-3 against Bayern Munich last Saturday night that nearly led to the Fuggerstädter completing a sensational comeback against the German record champions.

Zehnter – a highly-prized Wolfsburg summer signing – started both league fixtures in at left back under Paul Simonis. The former Augsburg academy man commemorated his first Bundesliga goal in a 1-1 draw against Mainz last weekend. After making one appearance under Augsburg head coach Enrico Maaßen during the 2022/23 campaign, Zehnter now has three German top flight appearances under his belt thanks to Simonis.

Zehnter will join club teammate Dzenan Pejcinovic, a young striker who has also earned a surprise starting role under Simonis, at the U21s. Pejcinovic has also started both league fixtures under Simonis, but has yet to net his maiden Bundesliga goal yet. The 20-year-old did record a hat trick in Wolfsburg’s opening round DFB Pokal victory.
