Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona ended in farce as both players had a man sent off in stoppage time.
When Diego Simeone is in the dugout and a top team is coming to town, there’s always the chance that things will kick off as Atletico try every method to ruffle the feathers of their opponents.
And they certainly needed to dig deep in their mission to tame Barcelona because for all their faults under Xavi, they’re certainly launching a charge in La Liga now.
In fact, in the end, it was indeed the Blaugrana who grabbed all three points at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium courtesy of a first-half strike from Ousmane Dembele.
The rejuvenated French winger slotted a smart right-footed finish past Jan Oblak after some fantastic footwork and ball progression from Pedri in the centre of the park.
And although Antoine Griezmann, formerly of Barca, almost drew Atletico level in the dying moments, a goal-line clearance ensured that it was the Catalan side who emerged victorious.
However, the game threatened to become less about football and more about mixed martial arts when both Stefan Savic and Ferran Torres were given their marching orders in injury time.
In truly bizarre scenes, both Barca and Atletico were reduced to 10 men when Savic and Torres were seen replicating what looked pretty much like a wrestling scene straight out of a UFC bout.
But regardless of what was going on, it was certainly a lot to take in as things got very heated and the referee was left with no choice but to dish out two red cards.
