Real Madrid reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League following their penalty shootout victory over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening.
Madrid had triumphed 2-1 in the first leg of the last 16 duel between the rivals but immediately surrendered their one-goal advantage at the Metropolitano. Only 27 seconds had elapsed when Conor Gallagher opened the scoring on the night for Atletico, firing home from six yards after Giuliano Simeone's flick fell into his path.
Atletico's stubborn defence proved an immense challenge that Madrid's misfiring forward line couldn't overcome across the 90 minutes, with Vinicius Junior skying a second-half penalty that would have decided the contest.
But the Brazilian's wayward spot kick meant the match went to extra-time and eventually penalties, with Julian Alvarez and Marcos Llorente missing the crucial penalties - the former after a VAR review - as Madrid set up a quarter-final tie with Arsenal.
