The Daily Mail has reported that Aston Villa have been keeping tabs on Matheus Cunha for quite some time and want to sign him in the ongoing transfer window. The future of their striker Jhon Duran is up in the air, and hence they want to keep a replacement ready in case he leaves the club.
Wolverhampton Wanderers signed Cunha on loan from Atletico Madrid in January 2023 and then consequently signed him permanently in the summer transfer window. Since then, he has made a name for himself while playing in the Premier League.
Cunha has scored 10 goals in 21 matches so far in the Premier League 2024/2025 season. Overall, Cunha’s goals scored per 90 minutes is 0.53. Moreover, his total G/A (goals + assists) is 14 for this season. His goal involvement equates to 0.74 per 90 minutes. Cunha’s non-penalty xG per 90 minutes is 0.53. This puts his npxG output at 9.98.

However, despite the performances that he has put in, his future at the club is up in the air as Wolves are fighting a relegation battle this season. Cunha is liked by Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Manchester United. All of them want to sign the player.
As stated earlier, Villa will need a replacement for Duran if he leaves the club in this transfer window. Villa have an edge right now in the competition given that they can provide Cunha with a taste of European football in the remainder of the season.
The Brazilian forward brings speed and goal-scoring prowess to any team. His ability to play across the front three positions would offer Aston Villa tactical flexibility. His quality and goal-scoring exploits suggest he could significantly boost Villa’s attack. Cunha’s intelligence in finding spaces and combination play could enhance Villa’s offensive strategies, making him a valuable addition to their ambitions.
Villa are eighth in the Premier League points table with 36 points in 22 games. Signing Cunha in the ongoing window can help them finish high in the remainder of the season and again challenge for a spot in European football next season. It remains to be seen if Cunha does move to Aston Villa in January.
