Aston Villa have completed the signing of Everton midfielder Amadou Onana for £50 million.

The 22-year-old has signed a five-year contract at Villa Park, and becomes Unai Emery’s third midfield signing of the summer after Ross Barkley and Enzo Barrenechea, who joined from Luton Town and Juventus respectively.

Onana departs Goodison Park after two seasons, in which he became a key player for the club, making 72 appearances and helping preserve their Premier League status.

As part of the deal, his former club Lille are entitled to 20% of the profit made on the £30 million fee they sold him for in 2022.

The sale could have implications on another of Everton’s prize assets’ future, with the Toffees now in a stronger financial position to rebuff Manchester United’s attempts to sign Jarrad Branthwaite, despite the fall through of the Friedkin Group’s takeover.

As for Villa, Onana is the latest, and possibly most important, piece added to a squad readying itself for the club’s first Champions League campaign in over 40 years.
