Olympique de Marseille are used to competing towards the top of Ligue 1, however, that wasn’t the case last season as the club burnt through four managers before missing out on European football entirely.

There was a summer rebuild with Roberto De Zerbi coming in as manager and an ambitious Premier League-centric player recruitment drive, led by new sporting director Medhi Benatia. Those changes currently see Marseille competing back towards the top of Ligue 1. OM are level on points with AS Monaco in joint second and are three points off leaders Paris Saint-Germain. Both OM and the Principality club have a game in hand on the reigning Ligue 1 champions.

Whilst Marseille’s resurgence will provide a significant challenge for Monaco, Les Monégasques’ CEO, Thiago Scuro, believes it is a good thing for Ligue 1. “We have Marseille showing themselves on a very good level. We can see the results of very high investment from the summer, both on and off the pitch,” Scuro told Get French Football News. “This is good for the league. We expect the league to be more competitive, more attractive and we also expect to keep ourselves in the top three.”

As Ligue 1 looks to promote itself globally, Scuro is looking at the bigger picture as increased competition drives up interest in France’s top flight.
