Florian Plettenberg has said the race to sign Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount is now between Manchester United and Liverpool, with the former also looking at Bayern Munich star Leon Goretzka.

after they lost against Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

Mount is out of contract next year and Chelsea are desperate to offload a large number of first-team players, but they are holding out for around £80m, meaning Erik ten Hag’s side are not close to meeting the Blues’ asking price at this moment in time.

While United are believed to be winning the race for the 24-year-old’s signature, there is also interest from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Liverpool.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is looking to sign at least two new midfield players this summer and is an admirer of Mount, though he has made West Ham captain Declan Rice his top priority.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are in dire need of midfield recruits but are close to confirming the addition of Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister.

Mount could yet sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge, but this does appear to be an unlikely outcome looking at the current situation.

And it has been said by Plettenberg that Manchester United are ‘pushing hard’ to bring Mount to Old Trafford.

Everyone at the club is ‘convinced’ by the signing with Mount set to ‘decide’ between Liverpool and the Red Devils, with Arsenal seemingly out of the race.

However, the price valuation is currently ‘€45-50m with bonuses included’.

Another midfielder the German journalist says United are interested in signing is Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka.

The 28-year-old Germany international has established himself as one of the best midfielders in Europe since leaving Schalke for Bayern in July 2018.

Goretzka is under contract until 2026 but there is believed to be some interest from the Premier League giants.

United are ‘monitoring’ the player’s situation at the Allianz Arena.

The only reason there is a rumour here is because Bayern want to sign Declan Rice, though Plettenberg claims Goretzka is ‘staying calm’ with a ‘clear’ ambition to stay where he is.

Unsurprisingly, ‘no concrete talks’ have taken place between the Red Devils and Bayern over a deal to sign the former Schalke player.
