Mikel Arteta believes timing is key when it comes to winning trophies - citing how Liverpool have won the Premier League this season with less points than Arsenal managed in each of the previous two campaigns.

Liverpool were crowned champions last month after beating Tottenham 5-1 and they claimed the title with 82 points.

That is less than Arsenal managed last season, when they finished with 89, and the previous campaign, when they had 84.

Arteta believes that shows how important timing is as he hunts for his first major trophy since 2020, when he guided Arsenal to the FA Cup during his first season.

Hopefully we are in the right moment, in the right place in Paris tomorrow, to earn the right to be in the final

Arsenal are in the semi-finals of the Champions League and they will travel to Paris Saint-Germain for the second leg on Wednesday night looking to overturn a one-goal deficit.

And asked if he feels under pressure to win a trophy this season, Arteta said: “We’re going to try to do this season.

“Winning trophies as well is about being in the right moment, in the right place. Liverpool have won the title with less points than we have in the last two seasons.

“With the points of the last two seasons, we would have two Premier League titles. So, you have to be in the right moment, in the right place.

“Hopefully here we are in the right moment, in the right place in Paris tomorrow, to earn the right to be in the final.”

Arsenal are in their first Champions League semi-final since 2009 and Arteta admits this is one of the biggest games of his managerial career.

The Spaniard has been in charge of the Gunners since December 2019, when they were languishing mid-table in the Premier League.

“One of the most beautiful [games of my managerial career], for sure,” said Arteta. “I mean, again, one win away from being in the final.

“We cannot ask for anything else. Let's not do the talking [now], let’s do it tomorrow on that pitch at 9pm when the game starts. Show our best, best, best, best version and win the game.

“We know what we can do. We showed it in the first leg as well in many moments, apart from the first 15 minutes when we had some difficulties and understanding why.

“And tomorrow, as I said, full clarity, what we have to do, how we have to do it and how much we have to embrace and enjoy this moment to get the best out of ourselves.”
